Create a positive work culture where officers can grow. You don’t want people to feel as though they are threatened or as if they won’t be able to express themselves. Show your officers that hard work will be rewarded and lead by example so that everyone understands what the culture of your team is about.

  1. Instill Loyalty in Your Team

You want your team to be loyal to the cause and you should try to instill this in them right away. Your team should understand why you’re doing what you’re doing and should be dedicated. A loyal team will work for the greater good while watching out for each other.

  1. Accountability Is Important

People need to be held accountable in the world of law enforcement. Make sure that your team knows the rules and that everyone will be held accountable for his or her actions. You will not be able to protect people when they make mistakes and you should drill that into your team so that they know to follow the rules at all times.

  1. Recognize Excellence

Recognizing excellence is important when you want everyone to work hard. When someone does a commendable job, then he or she deserves to be honored for it. Make sure that everyone knows that promotions, rewards, and opportunities are available to those who perform exceptionally well.

  1. Everyone Should Feel Safe

Finally, your team needs to feel safe and should know that measures are in place to protect everyone. They should be able to go to you as the leader to address any concerns. Be open about your policies and you will create the trust that will help your team to move forward with confidence.
